Only about one-ninth of an iceberg actually shows above the waterline. The rest — the true mass, the true shape, the true danger — sits hidden beneath the surface, invisible to anyone simply glancing at the tip poking out of the water. Sailors who learned to judge an iceberg by what they could see above the surface learned it the hard way, usually only once. The visible tip was real. It just was never the part that determined the outcome.
