When the Weaver Bird Builds Alone


If you grew up around the rural towns of south-western Nigeria — Ado-Ekiti and places like it — you already know this sight without me describing it. A big old tree, standing alone in a compound or by the roadside, its branches sagging under the weight of dozens of golden, teardrop-shaped nests, all swinging gently in the wind like the tree itself decided to wear jewellery.
