You know the moment. Someone hurts you — not by accident, but on purpose, or close enough to it that intention hardly matters anymore — and something in you quietly proposes a trade. Harden a little, it says, and you will never be caught off guard like this again. Keep people slightly at arm’s length, guard the tender places, and you will save yourself the next wound before it ever has the chance to land. It sounds, in the moment, like wisdom. It sounds like growing up.
