David said, “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). That statement is far more than a pleasant thought – it is a bold affirmation of faith and intentionality. David was not denying hardship; he was choosing his posture before the day chose it for him.
Many people go to sleep burdened by unresolved trouble and wake up allowing that weight to dictate their mood and attitude.
Without realizing it, they surrender the direction of their day, – and often the emotional climate of their homes and relationships – to circumstances. What follows is a ripple effect that touches everyone they encounter.
It is no surprise, then, that God described David, despite his many human flaws, as “a man after My own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). David’s inner core, his deepest instinct, was anchored in a profound love for God and a reverent desire to please Him. That inner alignment shaped his responses, drove his repentance, and fueled his determination to grow and be better each day (Psalm 51:10).
David’s declaration teaches us that how our day unfolds often begins with a conscious decision. Choosing gratitude and joy is not emotional denial; it is spiritual discipline. It is waking up and saying, “I will bless the Lord at all times” (Psalm 34:1), regardless of what the day may bring.
This is an example worth emulating: to live intentionally, to decide our response before circumstances test us, and to begin each day grounded in gratitude and joy, because God is worthy, and because our hearts, like David’s, are meant to grow closer to His.
